Dental Bridge

A dental bridge is one method used in cosmetic dentistry to replace one or more teeth that have decayed, been damaged or lost. A bridge is not only designed to replace missing teeth but also to prevent the teeth either side from drifting out of position.

In addition, a dental bridge, or any other form of cosmetic dentistry for replacing missing teeth, can significantly reduce the risk of gum disease, decay of the surrounding teeth and speech impediments.

It is only possible to use a bridge as a method of dental reconstruction if the teeth either side of the gap have sufficient strength to support the bridge and if you have good bone support.

A traditional dental bridge is basically a single false tooth that is held in place using two crowns. The complete construction (dental bridge) is then cemented into place with the crowns encasing the teeth either side of the missing tooth.

There is also the option of a resin bonded bridge which is a bridge that is created through fusing the false teeth together using a metal band which is then cemented to the back of the teeth either side of the bridge (usually only an option for front teeth).

As with veneers, a bridge is usually constructed from porcelain which is bonded to precious metal in order to add strength.

If you are looking at a dental bridge as an option to replacing a missing tooth or teeth then it might be useful to note that a bridge cannot be fitted until your gums have healed which normally takes around 6 months following an extraction.

A dental bridge generally last in the region of 10 years with the correct oral hygiene and dental care.

Like all cosmetic dentistry dental bridges do not come cheap although given the restorative nature of bridges you may find you have some level of cover from your dental insurance.

The cost of a dental bridge can vary quite dramatically depending on the level of reconstructive work required with the cost of a single tooth restoration generally ranging between $500 and $1,000. If you go for a resin bonded bridge the cost with usually be less than traditional bridge supported by crowns.

Other possible options for replacing missing teeth are dental implants and dentures.
