Family Dental Plans

It is amazing the number of families than don’t have a family dental plan despite the junk food rich diets that eat away at our teeth. The argument for not contributing towards a family dental plan or taking out dental insurance is generally cost with many families preferring to spend their hard earned cash on seemingly more useful or fun things.

Many families learn the hard way when they get hit with bills for dental work for 100’s or 1,000’s of dollars that they can ill afford to pay. These one off hits often make families think very hard about the cost of future dental care and encourage a late decision to take out a family dental plan or family dental insurance.

Quite often you speak to families that have got hit once and assumed that it was a once off and won’t happen again, or decide to recover from a heavy dental bill before checking out family dental plans. This approach has often proved misguided given the regular attention that teeth require with families having to cover further bills for routine dental care or more costly dental work such as route canal treatment, braces, crowns or bridges.

Many families neglect the family dental needs because they don’t have a dental care plan or dental insurance cover. If you imagine that the recommendation is that you should visit your family dentist every six months then the consequences of going for years without routine dental care because you don’t have insurance and don’t want to pay the cost of a dental visit can be quite severe.

I personally went over ten years without visiting my family dentist, not because I didn’t have a dental plan but out of fear. I can assure you I am now paying the price!

What many people don’t realise is that they are putting the health of their teeth at risk when the cost of a family dental plan isn’t that hard on the pocket. Dental care plans work in a different way to dental insurance in that you effectively pay a fee in order to receive significantly discounted and more affordable dental care. You can take out a family dental plan for just a few dollars a month which is a small price to pay to ensure your family receive the right dental care.

An additional upside for choosing a family dental care plan over dental insurance is that the discount usually applies to everything, including cosmetic dentistry that is not normally covered by insurance, although the level of discount tends to be less for cosmetic dental work.

One thing to check before taking out a family dental plan is that there are participating dentists in your local area. Some less scrupulous dental plan providers will offer family dental plans with no local coverage.
